IMPORTANT: Update at your own risk, you may cause damage to your equipment.
Watch the video below if you need clarification
First download dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic.bin from the dd-wrt website here
If your Asus firmware version is above 2.0.0.8 you will need to downgrade first. Get the 2.0.0.8 english firmware from here (Download using Global, watch out there’s 2 one is chinese)
Your current Asus firmware is shown under System Setup – Firmware upgrade when you are logged into your router
1. Downgrading (if you have 2.0.0.8 skip to step 2)
download the 2.0.08 firmware, you should end up with a zip file called FW_WL520gc_2008_EN.zip
extract the contents, it will contain a file called WL520gc_2.0.0.8_EN.trx. Rename this file to
WL520gc_2.0.1.1_EN.trx
Login to your Asus router default Ip is 192.168.1.1 default username / password is admin / admin
Navigate to System Setup – Firmware Upgrade
Select browse and locate WL520gc_2.0.1.1_EN.trx
Click upload and wait approx 80 seconds for it to reboot automically
Once it has updated check your firmware version again, it should now read 2.0.0.8
2. Installing dd-wrt
You will get an error if you try to install dd-wrt when your Asus router is not on v2.0.0.8. If you do make sure you have done step 1
Login to your Asus router default Ip is 192.168.1.1 default username / password is admin / admin
Navigate to System Setup – Firmware Upgrade
Select browse and locate dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic.bin
Click upload and wait approx 60 seconds.. don’t click upload again
All going well you will see a screen like below
Now enter a username and password of your choice and select change (default username / password is root / admin)
Thats it !! if you plan to use it as an AP make sure you secure it with WPA or greater
If you plan to use it as a bridge to an existing AP then read Asus WL-520GC into bridge mode
